Students, a subset of the amorphous “youth vote” political parties appear to crave (yet not so much that they actually make efforts to get young people on side), have fast become a government-manufactured underclass in England 💬 via ipaperviews

have successfully created a bloated tranche of middle learners-cum-earners, who leave university with little more to show than an average £45,000 of debt. Never mind that there are three million adults in UK higher education institutions, who make substantial financial contributions to the economy ; this group have never been particularly significant to any major party.

It was bad enough before. But things are grimmer now. The last few years have taken a toll on university life. Since 2020, I have visited campuses across the UK, and heard from students who have watched their university social scenes evaporate.

The reason for that is the same reason why scrapping the free tuition fee pledge is so easily done: in the eyes of politicians, students are at the bottom of the pile. Though leaders insist they want to prioritise innovation and boost the economy, refusing to support the generation best placed to create that bright future makes it clear they have no real intention of doing so.showing that almost a quarter of students would back a reduction to £6,000 per year . Unfortunately, to make any concession for the country’s 18-21-year-olds is considered too politically risky.

That appears to be what Starmer has decided. His about-turn is one the higher education generation have become well used to. He will rebound far more easily than Clegg, who will forever be tarnished by the great promise that wasn’t. But whether the UK’s students can bounce back from yet more political disappointment remains to be seen.
