There are currently 4,500 support classes for students with moderate to high needs across NSW, but demand continues to skyrocket as parents prepare for their school leavers for year 7.

Will Moodie is one of thousands of year 6 students in New South Wales trying to secure a placement in a support class in a mainstream high school next year.

"He is just the most delightful loving, gorgeous boy … but at the same time he can be a highly complex child," she said. Georgina Moodie says the parents of Will's classmates are in the same position, and when she posted about the issue on social media she was inundated with responses from parents around the state, anxiously waiting to find out.Demand for the support classes, which are aimed at offering extra help and resources for students with moderate to high needs, has been skyrocketing alongside the increase in diagnosed disabilities such as autism.

Ms Moodie said it's frustrating to see the department struggling with an issue it should have seen coming.
