The NSW mother is giving up hours of paid work each week to lead ethics classes as a volunteer at her son's primary school, as a shortage of teachers stops schools from offering them.
Less than a quarter of NSW public schools offer ethics classes due to a shortage of volunteer teachers.
"They just don't inherently have basic values and morals and I think that we need that," Ms Howlett says. Ethics classes teach students how to listen to others, form opinions, change their minds and how to disagree respectfully.ethics is only taught in a school if parents request it and the school can get a volunteer to run the class.
"Often a lack of volunteers can be due to socio-economic situations where people have economic pressures that mean they don't have the time or capacity to volunteer," Susan Ardill says. "I encourage members of school communities with an interest in providing ethics instruction or enrolling their child to contact Primary Ethics," Ms Car said.Ramya Aravind has been volunteering for four years at Parramatta West Public School, which her youngest children attend.
