Roads remain closed around the site of a major blaze in Surry Hills on Friday morning amid fears a fire-damaged building could collapse

Firefighters fear strong winds could bring down the walls of a fire-damaged building in Surry Hills.Roads remain closed around the site and could remain so for days.A group of high school students were seen running from the site of a massive fire that tore through two heritage-listed buildings in Surry Hills on Thursday, an eyewitness from a nearby shop says.

Tang said the children were wearing grey school pants with hoodies over the top of their heads. There were more than five but fewer than 10 students, he said, as black smoke began to come out from the windows. “A strong wind could bring them down, if it gets in the right direction … the corners are holding it up at the moment, but there’s every chance it could come down without notice.”

Acting Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said firefighters worked throughout the night to contain the fire, but it was still burning on Friday morning. Chalmers Street remains closed from the Cleveland Street intersection to Central Station, along with all of Randle Street. Elizabeth Street is also closed southbound between Eddy Avenue and Devonshire Street. A number of small alleyways near the site are also blocked.
