The transition to high school can be a rocky road for many students, with a major study finding a huge decline in self-esteem and wellbeing.

Adolescents’ satisfaction with their lives nosedives between the ages of 11 and 14, and experts are concerned anis largely going unrecognised, with social relationships and school work suffering.

“Schools need to place much more emphasis on self-esteem as part of the school environment,” Dr Whatman said.“Self-esteem can be developed by thoughtful, empathetic content and teaching, but this by itself does not greatly influence the social dimensions of the school environment and when they are not in school.”middle school reform and school culture

“Schools, even in the earliest years, need to work hard on improving that sense of belonging because it works as a protective factor when students start high school.
