Study indicates that the planetary health diet increases probiotic-associated bacteria in the gut microbiome Nutrients_MDPI LstSaar diet planetaryhealthdiet health nutrition microbiome microbiota bacteria gutmicrobiome guthealth

By Neha MathurApr 18 2023Reviewed by Lily Ramsey, LLM In a recent study published in the Nutrients Journal, researchers analyzed whole-genome data from fecal samples of healthy volunteers following any of these three diets, vegetarian or vegan , omnivorous , and planetary health diets.

So far, studies have not evaluated the effect of a PH diet on the human intestinal microbiome, which is a key determinant of human health. They collected fecal sample at four different time points: the beginning of the study and after two, four, and 12 weeks. They extracted deoxyribonucleic acid from these samples to perform whole metagenome sequencing.

The researchers noted a relatively stable α-diversity for all diet groups during the 12-week study period, although they observed slight changes among some participants at different time points. Though not considered significant during differential abundance analysis, within four weeks of following the PH diet, Bifidobacterium adolescentis and Coprococcus eutactus bacterial species increased in abundance in the gut by two-fold.

Conversely, the PH group showed a six-fold decreased abundance of Firmicutes bacterium CAG 94, suggesting that the PH diet shifted parts of the microbiome composition towards a VV microbiome. This bacterium is another interesting target for future research aimed at the development of novel probiotics that could supplement a healthy diet.

Preclinical study identifies new target for recurrent ovarian cancerPreclinical study identifies new target for recurrent ovarian cancerDespite recent advances, ovarian cancer remains the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, and there's a critical need for new treatment options, especially for advanced cancers that grow back after standard of care treatment. Results from a preclinical study, led by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, verified a new target for drug-resistant ovarian cancer and provided data to support a treatment approach that is already making its way into clinical trials.
