Footage showed fountains of molten rock soaring from fissures in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula between stora Skogfell and Hagafell after warning that eruption was imminent.

Icelandic police said they had declared a state of emergency for the area and the Civil Defence authority dispatched a helicopter to survey the extent of the eruption.
Local media reported that the evacuation of the fishing town of Grindavik had started, residents having received text messages telling them to leave quickly. On Saturday night, the town was again being evacuated, public broadcaster RUV reported. An outbreak in January burned to the ground several of its homes.
