In this conversation, Man Repeller’s Crystal Anderson opens up about her journey with mental illness, seeking inpatient treatment, and working in the fashion industry.
Fashion has long served as a “fantasy world” in which clothing can serve a greater purpose. For Anderson, someone who lives openly with, her interest in style stems from childhood and early adulthood, before she had the words to express the anxiety and depression she was experiencing. Since that time style has been deeply intertwined with Anderson’s personal and career trajectory.
From navigating the loss of a job to seeking inpatient treatment, Anderson is an open book when it comes her to mental health.talked to Crystal about how clothing is her armor, and how she uses fashion to manage living with a mental illness.: What are some of your earliest memories of style and challenges you had with your mental health?When I was a kid, my parents were really open to however I wanted to express myself visually, which really allowed me to go outside of myself.
