Though the 4.14 million rider figure is still just 72 percent of the 5.7 million riders who took the subway on the third Tuesday after Labor Day in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, it is up more than 100,000 from the 4 million riders last Tuesday, Sept. 12. The upswing comes as schools and universities have come back into session, while many companies across the Big Apple — and nationally — have begun more aggressively pushing employees back into the office.
