Owners of the beloved property closed public access following a reported burglary attempt.
in support of preserving public access garnering more than 3,000 signatures this week. Stronghold, the nonprofit owner of the property, posted a notice of the closure at the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain website, but many visitors are still not aware of it.
Sugarloaf’s status as a private land for public use reflects the wishes of its original owner, Gordon Strong, a wealthy patent attorney who died in 1954. Strong’s will created the private organization, Stronghold Inc., ensuring that the mountain’s natural beauty would be “available to all,” according to the Stronghold. The property, which is north of the District, sees about a quarter-million visitors each year, according to the site.
