Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll’s favourite holiday memories are seeing the joy in her children’s faces as they unwrap presents, but now she tells Brisbane Times she spends her break watching corny holiday movies with her daughter.

I think both years have been extremely challenging. For me personally, and for the Queensland Police Service as a whole. However, 2021 was worse for our organisation because of the loss of Senior Constable Dave Masters. It was such a difficult and tragic time for everyone.Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll in December 2020.

For me, it was when my children were quite young, watching them unwrap presents and the realisation that, for them, sometimes playing with the wrapping is more fun than the presents themselves. Children can find joy in the smallest of things. I don’t think I have had a “worst” Christmas memory; it is always such a special time to get together with family and friends.Every QPS member and their relentless and tireless efforts to help keep our community safe.

Naughty Santa. It is a Christmas game we play where each person chooses a gift but can steal another person’s gift if they don’t like theirs. My husband doesn’t like the game much – he thinks it is a bit Grinchy for Christmas – but with 30 to 40 people playing, it usually makes for a hilarious time.If you could share a lunch with anyone over the holidays, who would it be?

My husband, of course! It is not often that I am able to spend some genuine time with my family, and I will always take every opportunity I can.At the moment it is watching corny Christmas movies on Fox with my daughter. We cringe through some of them, but we always end up laughing together until the end.By trusting and relying on the support of a great team at work and my family at home. It is important to have that kind of support during your most challenging times.
