The need for volunteers is pressing as many older adults who live in nursing homes have become more isolated due to COVID-19 restrictions and there are fewer volunteers, according to Vantage Aging Director of Community Engagement Amina Hall. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 4-6 p.m. at Vantage Aging, located in the AES Building, 388 S. Main St., Suite 325, in Akron. To be eligible to volunteer, individuals must be at least 21, hold a current Ohio driver’s license, have transportation and successfully complete an application and background check. Interested individuals are asked toApproximately 20 percent of adults ages 65 and older experience feelings of loneliness and isolation, according to Hall.
Summit County Court of Common Pleas Probate Division Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer created the Senior Visitor Program to look out for the 2,600 adults under guardianship in Summit County. The program is a collaboration with Vantage Aging that is an extension of the nonprofit organization’s. The federally funded RSVP program matches volunteers ages 55 and older with organizations where they can share their time, interest, talents, knowledge and experience with older adults.
There are approximately 120 volunteers in RSVP, according to Hall, who said volunteering provides a sense of community for those who volunteer as well.
