Many expect this to be the final party conference before the next general election is held sometime in 2024, and that Mr Sunak planned to use it to show he was “ready to take the fight to Labour” despite the Conservatives’ poor position in the polls.that he didn’t think colleagues were “in full panic mode just yet”.
“A swing like the one in Selby is, you know, a pretty bad sign for us. We’re doing a lot better than we were, but I think it’s time we took stock,” they said. He agreed with Mr Sunak’s suggestion that the next election “is not a done deal”, but cautioned that the party “definitely has cause to be worried” if it can’t show progress on key areas such as the economy and the NHS.
