Winter is definitely still with us and Wednesday will have a frosty start. But the forecast is for warmer temperatures and clear skies ahead of a mostly rain-free weekend. MartaPascual3

Victorians will shiver through yet another frosty winter morning on Wednesday as a cold front moving in from the Southern Ocean continues to bring cold temperatures and widespread rainfall to large parts of the state.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Miriam Bradbury said the coldest overnight temperatures outside the alpine region – 1 and 3 degrees – had been recorded in the Wimmera and Mallee regions, in Victoria’s west. Bradbury said the cold blast could bring snow flurries 500 metres above sea level on Tuesday morning, including in the Grampians, and the Dandenong and Macedon ranges. Members of the public reported light snow dusting around Ballarat, but as of 10am there were no reports of widespread flurries in the ranges.“To get snow, you need the cold, but you also need precipitation and if you don’t have a lot of precipitation, there’s nothing to form the snow,” Bradbury said.

“The good news is that from Thursday and Friday onwards we are going to see an improving trend,” Bradbury said. “Still partly cloudy conditions, particularly south of the [Great Dividing] ranges, with a slight chance of showers, but the temperatures are really going to pick up through the end of the week.”
