Sunwing cancelled its operations out of Saskatoon and Regina on Dec. 29 through Feb. 3, leaving travel agents to help customers change plans

Travel agents who had booked clients’ trips to sun destinations in January are now having to find a workaround to keep their travel plans intact, reschedule for a future date or cancel altogether.

If she is able to find a flight out of Calgary or Edmonton with Sunwing, it’s at current prices, not the price previously agreed to, she noted. Flights with other carriers out of Saskatoon and Regina are also already busy, and even if she can find a seat, last-minute flights are expensive. Her January bookings included two destination weddings with departures scheduled for Jan. 7 and 9; those clients are devastated, she said.

Many CAA Saskatchewan customers who had flights booked this month are rebooking for a later date — not just with Sunwing, but other carriers, he said. “Please know that the decision to temporarily halt our operations from both airports was not made lightly but out of necessity due to several factors that prevented us from delivering the standards of service our Saskatchewan customers expect from Sunwing,” it said.

The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies said it is in contact with Sunwing executives and is advocating for members, policy flexibility, options for customers among other things, its president Wendy Paradis said in an emailed statement to the StarPhoenix.
