The Coalition has admonished Labor’s green hydrogen prospects as a “super-flop” after mining and energy giant Fortescue abandoned its staggering 2030 green hydrogen target.

Mounting criticism has been launched at Labor's green hydrogen dreams after mining and energy giant Fortescue abandoned its ambitious 2030 energy production target.and the consolidation of its mining and energy arms, essentially putting the corporate giant’s goal of producing 15 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030 on the backburner.

Shadow energy minister Ted O’Brien argued the shift away from green hydrogen by Fortescue boss Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest showed Labor’s renewables-only approach to hitting net-zero was bound to fail. “This was always a farce this idea that green hydrogen, which wasn't working anywhere in the world, just like intermittent power, which doesn't work 100 per cent anywhere in the world, is going to magically work here,” he told Sky News’ Andrew Bolt. “Because it's Twiggy’s own money and the shareholders’ money on the line ... you'd expect this sort of thing to happen.”

The Fortescue boss told Nine Radio in Perth on Thursday the job cuts and consolidation of the company’s mining and energy arms were about streamlining the company to avoid overlaps.
