San Diego's Jorge Chavez continues to show promise, winning a six-round super featherweight bout while wearing trunks with the Padres' bright alternate colors and 'San Diego' across them
Rising contender William Zepeda earned the biggest victory of his budding career Saturday night, defeating Joseph Diaz in a super lightweight bout at Pechanga Arena.
Neither fighter hit the canvas or even came close to doing so but the crowd was engaged throughout. The ring official had to do very little in the way of stepping in and separating the two men. The 22-year-old, decked out in trunks with “San Diego” written in script across the front and the teal and hot pink colors of the Padres’ “City Connect” alternate uniforms, overcame a first-round knockdown from Adrian Leyva to cruise to a tough but decisive unanimous decision in six rounds.
Chavez took control in the second round, using good movement, a steady left jab and the occasional straight right. That kept Leyva on his back foot and prevented him the time and space to again land the kind of punch that put Chavez on the canvas early.
