The Super Mario Bros. Movie star Keegan-Michael Key will perform an improvised song for Toad in the film. Based on the long-running Nintendo video game series, the upcoming animated film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as his brother, Luigi, and Key as Toad, a humanoid mushroom servant to Princess Peach . Written by Matthew Fogel and directed by both Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Following the recent release of the initial The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, the film has received significant backlash regarding Pratt's voice of the hero. While costar Jack Black affected his voice for his role as Bowser and Key had the pitch of his voice changed to resemble Toad, Pratt's voice for Mario seemingly remains unchanged.
“He does. I got to improvise a song in ‘Super Mario Bros.,’ which was an absolute blast. That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing. I was working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the internal journey of the character. And then with the directors, we sprinkled some things in, we moved it around. There was something about the timbre. I wanted it higher and higher and higher. And that’s where we ended up, and I’m really happy with where we ended up.
How Super Mario Bros. Movie Will Differ From Sonic Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not billed as a musical, Key's improvised Toad song adds a musicality not present in Sonic the Hedgehog or other video game-based films, setting itself apart in a unique way. With Black, himself one of the two-man band Tenacious D, having previously teased Bowser's musical side, The Super Mario Bros. Movie may also feature songs for other characters as well.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes on the heels of the success of Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel and, though the two films appear similar in nature, featuring iconic video game mascots as central characters, Key's revelation that Toad sings in the movie indicates that the two projects differ in various ways. Although both Mario and Sonic are CG-animated, Sonic's films were primarily live-action, relying on the fish-out-of-water dynamic with Tom while The Super Mario Bros.
