Supercars: Reigning champion Richie Stanaway has denied a switch ahead of the Bathurst 1000.
Supercars drivers like to say they’ll only start thinking about the championship once the Bathurst 1000 rolls around. The Great Race, run and won under great physical and mechanical duress, offers the equal biggest score of any single race , with 300 points up for grabs. With just two rounds and four races remaining thereafter, any big twist of fate on Mount Panorama could leave a driver facing an almost impossible recovery to title contention .
Including that first day in New Zealand, there have been only four races so far this year in which he’s failed to reach the podium. Only once has he gone consecutive races without a trophy, a streak that lasted just two races spanning Townsville and Sydney. With 600 still on offer after Bathurst, he can’t win the championship this weekend, but he can certainly put one hand on the title trophy.Chaz Mostert signalled his championship intention with a double podium at the Bathurst 500, but his campaign spluttered for months before finally kicking into gear late in the season.A loose wheel undid what could have been a victory chance on Saturday, a rare off day for Triple Eight. Instead he finished 22nd in the race and 13th overall for the weekend.
But Sandown left him badly bruised. A spin by co-driver Lee Holdsworth — a rare error for the veteran — put him on the back foot on a day further coloured by operational errors. Mostert salvaged seventh, but runaway winner Brown was able to blow out his advantage by more than 100 points. From Saturday in Perth, when he kickstarted his season, to Sunday night in Tasmania he was outscoring Brown by 24 points per round.
Broc Feeney was freed from Shane van Gisbergen’s shadow at the end of last year, when the Kiwi packed his bags for a NASCAR career in the United States, but his moment in the sun at Triple Eight has been short lived. He wrestled that back down to 68 points over the next two weekends thanks to a practically perfect Darwin performance and Brown’s bad luck in Townsville, but ever since then he’s gradually lost control of his title destiny.
His highs have been impressive — he’s won more races than any other driver this year — but he hasn’t met his 2024 target of improved consistency. While he’s certainly been better, he’s been bested on this front by Brown, who’s punished him severely for his lapses in form. He can’t be pushed out of mathematical title contention this weekend, but he can get as close as makes no difference.
Tickford’s late surge to second in the championship has as much to do with its lacklustre start to the season as it does its strong recent form.
