Australian vice chancellors argue their students get a great education and reject any criticism that ever bigger student numbers detract from the experience.
It’s why there is now increased interest in establishing smaller, more differentiated institutions that might specialise in teaching and learning rather than research.
“I think one of the reasons why we haven’t any new universities is that, from 2000, there are regulations saying you have to have a certain level of research to be a university and that enormously increases the cost of running the institution,” Norton said.In 2001, for example, there were just over 840,000 students in Australia’s higher education sector. Two decades later, this figure had nearly doubled.
“We know that people with those level ATARs don’t usually go to university and when they do, they have very high attrition rates,” he said.
