A former leading commander of the US navy in the Indo-Pacific has urged Congress to fast-track the development of Australia’s nuclear submarines, warning the AUKUS deal would only be significant if America follows through in the long term.

“We could have every good intention in the world, but we could be bound up by our own regulation and our own regulatory policy, so whatever could be done to relax that would be beneficial.” The announcement is expected to provide the first concrete insights into the cost, timing and procurement of theDuring a brief visit to Washington last week, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles acknowledged that building up an AUKUS-ready nuclear workforce “and we’re going to have to do a lot of work to get this right.”
