Aaron Hornlimann, 35, is behind a company whose technology makes it easier for people to get in and out of airports.
It was a coincidence that led to Aaron Hornlimann starting a company that landed him on theThe university dropout, who bred guinea pigs in his younger days, already had a failed business venture under his belt when a family friend, Heinz Corona, took him along to a business meeting with Jetstar.
“This was before we had smartphones and QR codes. So, the challenge was put to me; could I build that? At the time I didn’t know how, but I said sure, of course I can,” Hornlimann tellsworld-first technology allowing boarding passes to be sent by SMSLater, he went on to set up Elenium, a business with Corona and Fred Melki, who he had worked with at Jetstar’s IT operations. The trio set out to build technology that made it easier for people to get in and out of airports.
“The next thing was making sure that we had really goodwill with our investors, and that they were prepared that this might be a bit of a winter coming.Remarkably, Elenium managed to increase revenue during COVID-19. “We were the only ones who had that approval. The silver lining though was it forced us to miniaturise some of our technology and bring the operational cost down dramatically.”“He said to me at the beginning: ‘Don’t ever act like a pendulum. Don’t go from one extreme to the other, try and stay centred. Be resilient. Think quickly; act slow.’
