A 28-year-old surfer and local footballer, Lance Appleby, has been identified as the victim of a fatal shark attack off South Australia's coast. The search for his body continues.
The victim of a fatal shark attack off South Australia's coast has been identified as 28-year-old Lance Appleby. Mr Appleby was surfing at Granites beach, about 30km south-west of Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, when witnesses reported seeing a shark attack him just after 7pm on Thursday. Police confirmed an air, land and water search for the young surfer's body continues on Friday afternoon, with Granites beach still closed off to the public.
Mr Appleby, from Port Lincoln, was a local in the Streaky Bay community and a surfer, footballer and apprentice carpenter, according to his Facebook profile. Social media photos show the 28-year-old's recent travels overseas to Europe, including to Greece and Monte Carlo, as well as London in the United Kingdom. Other snaps showed Mr Appleby, who was a player for the Marble Range Football Club, surfing by the beach. South Australia Assistant Police Commissioner John De Candia earlier told reporters the attack was a'very sad and tragic circumstance' for the man's family and friends. 'Any death in these circumstances is absolutely tragic and does have a wide impact on lots of people,' he said.
