The surfing and local communities described the 28-year-old as a 'talented footballer', 'loved character' and 'an all-round good bloke'.

Long-term friend LeRoy Johnson said he had known Mr. Appleby since they were children and described him as an 'amazing human'. Many attendees had a personal connection to Mr. Appleby, who grew up on South Australia's west coast. An online fundraiser has collected over $117,000 to support a memorial, a plaque, and ease his family's financial burdens
