Hundreds of surfers and locals pay tribute to Lance Appleby, who was killed by a shark while surfing in South Australia.
Members of the surfing community gathered at Granites Beach on South Australia's west coast to honour Lance Appleby, who was killed by a shark on January 2. Hundreds of people participated in a paddle out event to mourn the death of the beloved surfer. Witnesses reported seeing a shark attack Mr. Appleby while he was surfing at Granites Beach. The surfing and local communities described the 28-year-old as a 'talented footballer', 'loved character' and 'an all-round good bloke'.
Long-term friend LeRoy Johnson said he had known Mr. Appleby since they were children and described him as an 'amazing human'. Many attendees had a personal connection to Mr. Appleby, who grew up on South Australia's west coast. An online fundraiser has collected over $117,000 to support a memorial, a plaque, and ease his family's financial burdens
