Queensland’s police commissioner has admitted she is concerned about a rise in police shootings after officers killed a man north of Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.
Addressing the media on Sunday, Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said such statistics were “always concerning” but her organisation was not doing much different to police services in other jurisdictions.
“We’re responding to more mental health jobs than we ever have. It is very difficult to respond to a knife, which is so quick and often lethal. We train to that constantly – constantly – and there are so many situations ... where we de-escalate and deal with these situations very, very safely.”“What is really clear post-COVID is the stats, in a lot of matters, are exponentially increasing,” she said.“Mental health stats, DV stats, youth crime stats.
A Special Emergency Response Team was sent to take the 29-year-old, who was facing 47 criminal charges, into custody.
