The union is seeking a 15 per cent pay rise, while the government has offered an interim boost one-fifth the size.
The strike will begin from the start of the morning shift today, according to the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, with a rally in Sydney's Hyde Park planned from 11.30am AEST.Other rallies are planned in Tweed Heads and Albury.
The association is calling for a 15 per cent pay rise, while the state government has offered an interim three per cent pay rise, back-paid to July 1, on condition that the association pause its strike. "I want to be very clear – nurses accepting the interim pay rise and pausing strike action will not amount to accepting the government's wages offer," Health Minister Ryan Park said yesterday.
Despite this, the association plans to move ahead with its industrial action, though minimum staffing levels in hospitals around the state will be maintained. The Industrial Relations Commission has ruled against a strike today, but the association says that while it as a body may be fined, no individual nurse or midwife can be penalised for taking part.
People in NSW are urged today to only attend hospital emergency departments if they have genuine life-threatening conditions.: Stay across all the latest in breaking news, celebrity and sport via our WhatsApp channel. No comments, no algorithm and nobody can see your private details.
