Amid rising bowel cancer rates in young adults across the globe, a US-based gastroenterologist has pointed to emulsifiers, which are found in a variety of foods.
US gastroenterologist reveals surprising foods which may be fuelling bowel cancer surge among young people
Emulsifiers are typically found in processed foods with ingredients that don't typically mix together very well, such as oil and water. “Something in the microbiome has changed and it’s setting in motion this chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.” Emulsifiers are also commonly found in many pre-packaged and processed foods, including salad dressings, nut butters, meats and baked goods.
Alarmingly, the incidence among adolescents and young adults has risen by 266 per cent in the last 30 years.Among Australians aged 25-44, bowel cancer has been reported as the deadliest cancer and ranked as the seventh leading cause of death.
