Several mall businesses on Crown Street fear the council’s planned upgrade will once again make Surry Hills a construction zone after years of light rail disruption and COVID | natassiazc

Surry Hills businesses have seen their fair share of disruption over the last decade. First the light rail upended Devonshire Street and turned parts of the neighbourhood into a construction zone for about five years; some vendors. Then two years of COVID restrictions forced those that remained to shut or curtail their services.

But those opposed say the upgrade lacks vision, favours nighttime dining and the hospitality industry over other ventures, and will again make Surry Hills a construction zone. Their agitation comes as the state government pushes for local landowners and businesses in SydneyCafe owner Lucia Lenarduzzi said she would be forced to shut her business because construction on the pavement would deter customers.

Nicola Reindorf said small businesses had their own ideas for how to improve the street and the council’s version lacked vision. It comes as the government pushes for businesses to play a greater role in revitalising Sydney streets. The upgrade is still open for consultation – stakeholders will meet on Monday night – and Moore said the council would work with businesses to minimise disruption. She hoped they would come around to seeing the benefits.

Large bar and restaurant The Winery is one supporter. Manager Lachie Thompson said more al fresco dining and greenery would make the street a multipurpose destination.“It could encourage people to come here, not to just do one thing, but to say, ‘Hey, we can go to Crown Street, maybe we’ll grab a coffee, maybe we’ll grab a few drinks,’” he said.

“Businesses like mine will go elsewhere because it’s too hard. We’re bringing people from outside the area just as much as anyone else.”
