Unlike the last day of kinder, 'lost' lasts are quieter; moments when I didn’t realise it was the last time. It just happened, then it never happened again | OPINION

Last Saturday morning, I lazily sent my teenager to buy me a coffee from the local cafe while I put on a face mask . It felt, given the low bar COVID has set, relaxing and indulgent.

I was inundated with messages from other women saying how much they needed that reassurance, that they were buried under needy babies and toddlers and preschoolers. To them, the thought of life being any different seemed unfathomable. The thing about parenting little ones is that you have no experience of parenting anything else.

No, the Lost Lasts are quieter, and rarely photographed. As I look back over the shoulders of the 17-year-old and 13-year-old walking next to me, I see that somewhere behind us is the last time they were small enough to be carried asleep from their car seat. But I didn’t realise it was the last time, or either of them. It just happened and then it never happened again.

This isn’t a “treasure every moment” plea to the parents behind me in the parenting expedition. Such statements are annoying from well-meaning elders when you haven’t slept well in two years and you’re covered in someone else’s bodily fluids. While there are many precious and life-affirming moments of parenting little kids, there are also lots of moments of drudgery. It’s OK to acknowledge that.
