A 32‑year‑old man faces two counts of murder after investigators discovered the bodies of a 79‑year‑old and a 59‑year‑old on a property in Gurranang, NSW. The suspect was arrested at a Grafton hospital and charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
A 32‑year‑old man has been charged with the murders of two men who were found on a private property in northern New South Wales, sparking a dramatic investigation by local police.
The first body, that of a 79‑year‑old resident, was discovered inside the house on Summerland Way in Gurranang, a small community north of Grafton, on September 13. After the initial burial of the elder man, investigators returned to the same site early the following week and uncovered the body of a second man believed to be aged 59.
Second Victim Found Shed
The second victim was located inside a shed on the property, an area the deceased allegedly had been occupying for a limited period. Police superintendent Joanne Schultz, who led the investigation, said officers were "caught off guard" by the discovery and confirmed that foul play had taken place. She further noted that the 59‑year‑old was not a local resident and most probably died within 24 to 48 hours of arrival at the property.
Strike Force Faneel, working alongside the homicide squad, moved quickly to apprehend a suspect after the second body was identified. At around 12:15 p.m. on the day of the arrest, authorities seized the suspect-a 32‑year‑old male-at a Grafton hospital. He was transported to Grafton police station where he faced two counts of murder and an additional charge related to the theft of a motor vehicle.
The suspect is currently held in custody as detectives sift through forensic evidence and witness statements to piece together a timeline of events. The case highlights the serious nature of violent crime in rural communities and underscores the need for vigilant law enforcement. Investigators are analysing CCTV footage, interviewing neighbouring residents, and conducting forensic examinations of the bodies to understand any links between the victims and the suspect.
Community Shock Security Concerns
The local community has expressed shock and concern following the revelations, with several families calling for increased security measures at residential properties. Meanwhile, the police have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that every lead could be critical in resolving the case. The ongoing investigation is expected to yield further details as more evidence is scrutinised and reconstructed.
The incident raises questions about safety protocols when a property is briefly occupied, and serves as a grim reminder of how quickly a peaceful setting can turn into a crime scene. With the suspect charged, authorities are awaiting court proceedings that may set a precedent for handling similar cases in rural NSW in the future.
