Suspect escapes police after chase on I-805 [Breaking]
A potentially armed suspect escaped police after a chase down Interstate 805 Saturday morning.
It started when San Diego police officers attempted to stop a man driving on South 43rd Street at Alpha Street in the Shelltown neighborhood shortly after 9 a.m., Officer Chelsea Ulibarri said. The man was a known suspect from an earlier incident and was potentially armed with a handgun, Ulibarri said. She did not have details of the previous incident.
As police tried to stop him, he drove southbound in the northbound lanes of I-805, before stopping his vehicle and running away in National City, she said. “He stopped the vehicle, ran out in foot into a canyon behind Plaza Bonita Mall and he was hunkered down,” she said.“Officers created a team and searched for him and were unable to find him.”
Ulibarri said several officers were aided by a police helicopter and police dogs in the search. They did not release a description of the suspect, citing the ongoing search.
