A suspected human skull was discovered at a popular hiking trail in Springbrook National Park, Queensland, prompting a search by police and volunteers. While no other bones were found, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Queensland police have sent off a suspected human skull bone found at a popular Gold Coast Hinterland hiking trail for forensic testing . Police and SES crews searched Springbrook National Park after the bone was discovered by a hiker on Friday morning near the Best of All Lookout. More than a dozen volunteers searched the rainforest area off Repeater Station Road over the weekend. However, no other bones were found.
Locals were concerned about the discovery, which came at one of its busiest tourist periods over the Christmas and New Year break. Springbrook has a population of less than 1000 people and is known for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforests. There were reports the bone could belong to a child, although details were yet to be officially confirmed. There have been no recent public reports of foul play in the area, which is popular with tourists. “The bone was located approximately 10 metres off the main walking track to the lookout,” Senior Sergeant Mitch Gray said.Police suspected the skull had been placed there but the circumstances were yet to be determined.Anyone with information is urged to contact police
