Pina colada cocktails will be sent for testing in Australia after a group of tourists fell ill at Fiji’s Warwick resort, the country’s tourism minister has told local media.after drinking ready-made cocktails at the resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast on Saturday afternoon.Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka told Fiji news outlet FBC News the drinks being investigated were pre-packaged pina coladas served from the resort’s Suva Wing Bar, and they would be sent to Australia for analysis.
David Sandoe told Sky News his daughter and granddaughter, named Tanya and Georgia, were among those who fell ill. He said the pair were medically cleared to travel and will return home to Sydney on Monday night.Warwick Fiji in a statement on Monday morning said the resort is undertaking a “thorough investigation”.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said it was providing consular assistance to two Australian families in Fiji. “We continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions. Be alert to the potential risks around drink spiking and methanol poisoning through consuming alcoholic drinks. Get urgent medical help if you suspect drink spiking,” the warning read.The incident comes just a month after the mass drink poisoning in Laos that claimed the lives of Melbourne friends Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles.
