A 'suspicious' fire has broken out at a retirement village north of Melbourne, with one resident yet to be accounted for.

More than 20 firefighting vehicles arrived at the scene on Wednesday morning at Kingsgate Village on Royal Parade in the Victorian country town of Kilmore.

Picture: Nine News "Victoria Police is treating the fire as suspicious and will investigate the fire once deemed safe," a CFA statement read. "It is expected detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad and an arson chemist will attend the property this morning," police said in a statement. Footage captured by Nine News shows the retirement village covered in what appears to be a thick layer of smoke, or fog, with dozens of emergency services vehicles parked out the front.
