At least 96 people dead in the past few days in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India, as a scorching heatwave continues to affect large areas of the country

Ballia, along with central and eastern Uttar Pradesh, is currently grappling with oppressive heat.

All the fatalities in Uttar Pradesh, totalling 54, were reported in Ballia district on Sunday, some 300 kilometres southeast of Lucknow, the state capital. S. K. Yadav, a medical officer in Ballia, said in the past three days, some 300 patients were admitted to the district hospital for various ailments aggravated by heat.
