Winning "ugly" has never looked so good for the NSW Swifts, who have reclaimed their view from the Super Netball summit at the expense of the Collingwood Magpies.
After bouncing back against the Fever on Tuesday night, the Swifts started brightly but found the Magpies to be a far tougher opponent. A perfect showing in front of goal - 100 per cent accuracy in the first quarter - offset the struggle to gain an ascendancy. The Swifts were not as dominant defensively, failing to cut off supply to Magpies shooter Shimona Nelson, who helped her side to a 16-14 lead at the first break.
Midcourter Madi Browne led the Magpies' hopes of a victory, combining well with Gabrielle Sinclair to torment the Swifts. However, NSW's Helen Housby kept the Swifts' noses in front throughout the final term with a series of offensive rebounds and a perfect shooting record in front of goal. "The nature of this season has been a grind for everyone but we got out of jail today. I think we need to do some more sessions and just play netball – feel the love and fun of the game.
