The key forward and the veteran champ are officially on their way to two Victorian powerhouses.
With the free agency window opening on Friday morning , the AFL ticked off the paperwork and later revealed that the will receive a second-round draft selection as compensation for their club legend.will receive for key forward Joel Amartey .
While the Greene pick is in the 20s, the Swans pick, however, will come after their second-round selection . He is an inaugural Giant, played 282 games with the club, and kicked 450 goals. He was also captain from 2022 through to the end of 2026 but was considered a spiritual leader long before then.
“Toby is a star of the competition, we have admired and respected him from afar and we’re looking forward to having him complement our current playing squad. ,” Geelong footy manager Andrew Mackie said.
“His experience, competitiveness and capacity to elevate those around him will be a valuable addition to our group both on and off the field. We welcome Toby, his wife Georgia and daughter Isla to the club. ”It is thought the Blues tempted Amartey to leave the Swans with a five-year deal worth about $1 million a season.
Amartey is 27 years old and has shown glimpses of immense talent, but his body has regularly let him down . He has had history of soft-tissue injuries, as well, and managed just eight games in 2025 and played just 15 this year for a 28-goal return. Carlton said it was “thrilled” to welcome the forward to Ikon Park and he would add “valuable experience to the group”.
Amartey will join former teammates at the Blues, in Will Hayward, Ollie Florent, George Hewett and Nic Newman, with Hayward his former housemate and Florent an old high school buddy.
“From the passionate fanbase to seeing the momentum Carlton got from the middle of this year, combined with knowing the quality people they have at the club, it made it an easy decision in the end,” Amartey said. “Off the field I like to bring my energy around the club, I really want to bring that and earn the respect of not only the players and staff at Carlton but also every Blues fan.
“I have felt so welcomed already, I can already see how great the environment is here and can’t wait for pre-season to roll around and get to work. ” Carlton football boss Chris Davies said Amartey would bring an “experienced and dynamic” presence to the forward line.
“We believe Joel can play a valuable role up forward for us. His presence in the forward line speaks for itself, and he will give us another avenue to goal alongside Harry McKay, which we are excited to see develop as next season goes,” Davies said.
“Over the last 12 months, we’ve made it a real focus to bring in players of great character who can add just as much to the group off the field as they do on it. Joel fits that mould perfectly for us. ”
