A proposed development of over 300 apartments on Sydney's Georges River foreshore has ignited debate over its potential impact on residents during flooding events. The NSW government has rejected the plan citing flood risks, but the developer is challenging the decision.

A controversial proposal to build over 300 apartments on the Georges River foreshore in Sydney 's south-west has faced criticism due to concerns about its potential impact on residents during flooding events. Developer Mirvac is challenging the NSW government's rejection of a planning proposal that would allow for the construction of 319 waterfront apartments and 21 terrace homes, along with restaurants and cafes, at its Georges Cove Marina in Moorebank.

The site, near Newbridge Road, is considered a high flood risk, with Liverpool Council identifying it as land susceptible to significant evacuation difficulties. While Liverpool's Liberal Mayor Ned Mannoun supports the plan, citing community backing and its potential to enhance the quality of life for residents, the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has expressed concerns. The department argues that the development would increase residential and commercial development in a high-flood-risk area with limited evacuation options, potentially putting residents at risk during major flood events. Mirvac, however, maintains that the complex would provide a safe and attractive residential opportunity, with flood-resistant construction and a shelter-in-place strategy. The Independent Planning Commission is currently reviewing the case.
