Asbestos-contaminated mulch has been found in schools, hospitals, parks and several transport projects in Sydney, as well as along a bridge on the south coast. Mulch in NSW is regulated under the Protection of the Environment Operations Regulation 2014. It must not contain asbestos or other contaminants such as metal, plastics, polystyrene and glass.
