The federal government is facing calls to help repatriate children stuck in Syria after the presumed death of a boy held in a prison camp. 9News
The family of Yusuf Zahab, who would have turned 18 in April, said they were devastated to learn of the boy's death.
It's unclear exactly when the teenager was thought to have died but he was said to have caught tuberculosis last year and been injured in an Islamic State siege of the Hasaka city prison in January. "In a recording that made it outside the jail, Yusuf begged for help from the Australian government as he witnessed death and destruction around him," the family said, referring to recordings released by HRW in January.
"Our worst fears are now a devastating reality for this young Australian. This deeply troubling news should serve as a wake-up call for the current government.
