Byram Johnston, the former CEO and chairman of funds administrator Mainstream Group, has joined the rush of wealthy city buyers investing in country pubs after taking charge of the near 150-year-old Tarana Hotel near Lithgow in central-western NSW.last year, said he planned to retain the pub’s authentic feel, tellinghe had a “good feel of what people are looking for in outback hotel”.
Keeping it authentic: new Tarana Hotel owner Byram Johnston promises he won’t bring Woollhara to the countryside.“I feel the Tarana Hotel, with its historic memorabilia and friendly atmosphere, can stand on its own. Just like other iconic hotels such as the Birdsville Pub or the Blue Heeler, the Tarana’s secret is in its authenticity and its long and colourful history.”
Dating back to 1873, when it started out as the Railway Hotel servicing visitors and workers on the main western line from Lithgow, the ’Nar, as it’s known by locals, is also popular with Sydneysiders, being a picturesque two-hour country drive or train ride away.“The Central West is a massive growth area,” Mr Johnston said. “Hundreds of people are pouring out here on weekend drives.”
