The harbour city’s transport systems often grind to a halt in the wet. But decision makers can adapt to changing conditions, as can we.
One of the great truisms of Sydneysiders is they hate rain. Not just because it goes against our collective identity of “beach”, but because our transport system seems to go to pieces when the weather turns bad, as it has this week.
The big paradox here is that governments, policymakers and transport engineers all want our transport systems to operate at capacity most of the time because it’s environmentally and economically efficient. But when typical demand is already near capacity, there’s less slack to absorb disruptions. Seeing the system falter in the rain is a sign that we’re making the most of our current infrastructure, but, when lightning strikes, more wiggle room would help.
