A P-plater in Sydney has been convicted after a high-speed crash left another driver with life-altering injuries. Jayden Elmasri was found guilty of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm after speeding and colliding with another vehicle, then fleeing the scene. The victim requires round-the-clock care for the rest of his life.

A Sydney P-plater has been found guilty of almost killing another driver after a catastrophic crash in the city’s south-west. Jayden Elmasri was speeding in a hire car when he T-boned another vehicle on Davies Road in Padstow, travelling at least 45km over the speed limit.

“There’s a huge accident. The car is on fire,” a call to Triple-0 said.

“Three occupants jumped out of the first vehicle. Hey mate, don’t go away. Come here,” another person can be heard saying on a Triple-0 call. But driver Elmasri and two passengers fled the scene, leaving a man in the other car unconscious and barely alive.

The victim suffered a traumatic brain injury, fractured legs, ribs, spine and pelvis. Security cameras captured Elmasri’s every move as he made his way home. The P-plater always denied being behind the wheel, despite leaving his licence behind. Elmasri’s two friends, who were passengers in the car, were ordered by the court to give evidence at his trial.

An arrest warrant was issued by Judge Robert Newliands after one of them refused to show. He didn’t make that same mistake again after spending the night in custody. Elmasri was found guilty of aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and faces 11 years jail. As for his victim, he will need 24-hour care for the rest of his life.
