The official transfer process of the Island to the Cadigal people began today after the NSW government announced $43 million to regenerate and restore Me-Mel. 9News
Sydney Harbour's historical Me-Mel Island will be returned to the Aboriginal community for future management and conservation of the land.
"Me-Mel is an opportunity for truth telling, and it's about recognising the past and unlocking the future." The heritage listed island has a rich array of Aboriginal, historical and natural heritage values, including more than 30 buildings and other structures dating from the 1830s to the 1960s.
