The milestone follows a three-year candidacy period and a record-breaking Sydney Marathon a few weeks ago where 25,000 runners participated.
Avid runners are celebrating the news that the Sydney Marathon is joining the World Marathon Majors. Sydney Marathon will become the seventh city to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, joining New York City, London and Tokyo.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said it would provide a multi-million-dollar boost to the economy and an "unforgettable experience for the runners on one of the most scenic marathon courses in the world".The Sydney Marathon takes in ocean views along the course and finishes on the steps of Sydney Opera House.
Race director Wayne Larden called the announcement a "monumental achievement" after a three-year vetting process.
