Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone has voiced his support for a new proposal to hit foreign property buyers in NSW with higher taxes in a bid to increase housing supply in the state.

“We want overseas investors to help us build more homes and pay their fair share towards that goal,” he said. He also said it was important to understand the difference between migrants and foreign buyers who are often purchasing property to “ride the wave of housing profits” in large cities. “Homes are here for people to live in and I think they should restrict foreign ownership of homes especially during a housing crisis,” he said.Mr Carbone said the housing crisis was not simply an issue of supply.
