A hot, dry airmass building over Western Australia will be responsible for the thermostat soaring in many parts of the south-east to finish the week, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne.
Sunseekers can thank outback WA for the hot weather we'll see over the country's south-east in the coming days.In summer when there is a lack of rain over this region, it heats up under persistent sunshine and the hot, dry airmass that develops as a result becomes a driver of heat throughout the rest of the country.
This week Learmonth in north-western WA hit 46.1C, which is February's hottest temperature anywhere in Australia... for now. A low intensity heatwave will also build across south-eastern Australia as the rest of the week progresses. And after that? It will lead to a significant drop-off in temperatures too, with the city's forecast reaching just 27C.The cool change is due at the same time as Melbourne's hottest weather. The maximum could be close to 39 on Friday, and then just 22 on Saturday.
