Futurity Investment Group's cost of education index reveals a significant surge in education costs across Australia. Sydney takes the lead with the highest projected cost for government, Catholic, and independent schooling.

The Futurity Investment Group's 'cost of education index' has unveiled the expenses families face in various Australian regions for 13 years of schooling, encompassing government, Catholic, and independent options. Sydney emerged as the country's most expensive location for a full government school education, with a projected cost of $150,323 for a child commencing in 2025, marking a substantial 59 percent surge compared to last year's figures.

This represents a 22 percent premium above the national average of $123,294 for a 13-year government education and surpasses Perth, the second-costliest location, by over $28,000, where the estimated cost is $122,106.While school fees and voluntary contributions constitute a mere five percent of the total Sydney education cost this year, the remaining expenses encompass electronic devices, tuition, and uniforms. Furthermore, Sydney claims the title of Australia's most expensive city for an independent education, with a projected 13-year expenditure of $411,108 for a child beginning in 2025, experiencing a nine percent increase from 2024. School fees account for 55 percent of this overall cost.Canberra takes the crown as Australia's most expensive city for a Catholic education, with a forecasted total cost of $215,633 for a child starting in 2025, representing a three percent rise from the previous year. School fees constitute 46 percent of the total cost of a Catholic education for a child commencing school in Canberra this year. Outside the major metropolitan areas, Queensland emerges as the most costly state for both regional and remote government education, with an anticipated 13-year expenditure of $90,267. Queensland also holds the title of the most expensive state for a regional or remote Catholic education, at $157,805 over 13 years, although this figure represents a four percent decrease from the previous year. Conversely, Western Australia boasts the highest cost for non-metropolitan independent education, with a projected 13-year expenditure of $277,862, marking a 32 percent jump from 2024. Sarah McAdie, from Futurity Investment Group, emphasized the considerable strain education costs impose on many Australian families. She stated, 'Spiralling cost of living, rent, and mortgage repayment pressures mean many households are under considerable pressure. With less discretionary money to spend, it is going to be a challenge for many families to pay for education, including school fees and voluntary contributions, which have all increased in the past year.' McAdie observed that parents continue to prioritize education but are scaling back on expenditures for supplementary items such as tuition, musical instruments, and elective courses. 'A growing proportion of parents are also choosing to delay an education opportunity for their child,' she added. 'Parents who have planned and saved for education will be in a better position in the long run and will have the opportunity to explore and afford choice when it comes to their children's education.
