The eastern grandstand at Accor Stadium will be the first to be named after a woman in NSW, the government says.

Australian sporting legend Cathy Freeman will be honoured by having the eastern grandstand of Accor Stadium named after her, in what the government says will be the state’s first to be named after a woman.

The move comes after a nomination process from the NSW government, which invited the public to choose a female athlete they believed deserved the honour.Cathy Freeman celebrates after winning gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. From that stand, tens of thousands of people watched Freeman light the Olympic flame to mark the start of the 2000 Sydney Olympics and win gold in the 400-metre final.

“I hope that my story continues to inspire generations of girls and boys to chase their own dreams in sport and life.” Premier Chris Minns said it was “about time” the state had a grandstand named after a woman, particularly after the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.“I want the next generation of young girls to watch sport at this stadium, looking up at the Cathy Freeman Stand, thinking about their own sporting dreams,” Minns said.

The decision comes after the NSW government last month announced a “giant” permanent mural had been commissioned to memorialise the Matildas’ success at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
