Next week’s Quad leaders meeting in Sydney has been cancelled and the leaders will now gather in Japan on the weekend.

Mr Albanese, who was left red-faced by the cancellation, initially said the Sydney meeting might still proceed but with a representative of the US government attending. That has now been ruled out.US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Quad meeting in Tokyo last year.Australia and India have been invited to the G7. Mr Biden will also attend the G7 before going straight home to deal with the debt ceiling crisis.
President Biden’s cancellation, due to domestic political factors in the United States, was a big embarrassment for Mr Albanese, who had confirmed Mr Biden’s attendance just hours earlier.“I am pleased that President Biden is able to take up my invitation to address parliament,” the prime minister said in a statement issued Tuesday night.But overnight, Mr Biden cancelled both his trip to Australia and a visit to Papua New Guinea on Monday, alongside Mr Modi.
“President Biden emphasised the importance of the Quad,” he said. “He was very disappointed at some of the actions of some members of Congress and the US Senate.Advertisement
